Historic icon of the Mayan culture, Chichen Itza is one of the most
important tourist sites in the world. This archaeological zone is
located east of the Yucatan state, about 120 kilometers from the
city of Merida, Mexico, and like the Machu Picchu was elected one
of the new wonders of the world in 2007. He also declared a World
Heritage Site by UNESCO (1988), has a very hot climate for most
of the year.
The impressive group of monuments means an enormous attraction
for those interested in both general culture and for history buffs.
For many, travel is a pre-Hispanic times. There, visitors can visually
rejoice with buildings like the "Pyramid of Kukulcan",
locally called "The Castle", built in the twelfth century
AD by the Maya Itza, in turn known as the "wise initiated"
or "water witches".
Every year during the spring equinox, the Temple of Kukulcan is
leading by an impressive natural phenomenon of light and shadows
that fall on the steps of the pyramid. This causes what is known
as "the descent of the feathered serpent," a wonderful
event that represents the symbol of the god Kukulcan and naturally
generates large number of tourists visiting.
In another area, Chichen Itza with the complex for the "Ball
Game," which with 168 meters long 70 wide is the largest among
those discovered in the region. According to archaeologists, it
is linked at the end of the Classic period and the beginning of
a new era. Meanwhile, "El Caracol" so named because of
its circular shape and stands out as a modern astronomical observatory.
The last mention has to do with the spectacular "Cenote Sagrado",
with 60 meters in diameter and 13 deep functioned as the place where
you make offerings to the god Chac, lord of the rains to the Mayan
villages. This well was obtained treasures such as jewelry and other
objects of gold, like bones of women who were thrown to the god
as part of the offering.
The name "Chichen Itza" naturally is Maya and translates
as follows: "on the edge of the well of the Itza". Currently
a gem for tourism, cultural and historical richness archaeological
site makes a unique opportunity for insights about the great civilizations
of the past.
